2009 SPRING SEASON

Bantams and Senior GRAPPLING
sanctioned for FALL SEASON

The San Diego Wrestling Association  holds two wrestling seasons each year: 

• Fall Season - September 1 to November 15 - Bantams thru Juniors wrestle FOLKSTYLE.  Senior division wrestles FREESTYLE, GRECO-ROMAN, GRAPPLING.
• Spring Season - March 1 to June 30 - Bantams thru Seniors wrestle FREESTYLE and GRECO-ROMAN.  Seniors also wrestle GRAPPLING. TOURNAMENTS ARE NOT SANCTIONED FOR ROOKIES.
• Tournaments - Tournaments are normally on SATURDAY.
• Association Duals - Each year we have the opportunity of wrestling both FS and GR in the State Association Duals Tournament.  We generally send a team to represent SDWA.  The team seeds winners of it's Association Championships and has a wrestle-off to see who will compete.  The Association's State Coach is normally in charge of picking the team.
• Senior/Veterans Team -An SDWA Senior/Veterans team of SDWA affiliated clubs and independent wrestlers who wrestle in SDWA to represent us in state, regional and national events.  We have not defined our level of support for the team at this time.  If you have an interest in being a part of this team as an administrator,  coach, wrestler, or providing sponsorship assistance, please contact the webmaster.  

2009 SDWA SPRING SCHEDULE

Sometimes events beyond our control cause changes or cancellations in the schedule. 
It's always good to check the schedule each week (Friday night) to see if there are any changes. 

CHANGES FOR THE FALL: 

There have been a number of changes in what will be wrestled in the FALL.  Here's a synopsis of what has been decided and what is still in discussion:

• Bantams, Midgets, Novice, Schoolboy, Cadet, and Junior divisions  will wrestle FOLKSTYLE  

• Schoolboy, Cadet, and Junior divisions  will wrestle  FOLKSTYLE.

• Open/Veterans division will wrestle FREESTYLE and GRECO-ROMAN. 

• Additionally a modified USAW style GRAPPLING at the Senior level only.

SCHEDULE:  Finalized.  See below.

AWARDS:  Medals for 1st, 2nd & 3rd place only.

USA WRESTLING MEMBERSHIP CARDS will be sold at the tournaments at a cost of $40.00  Cards are available for $30.00 +fee on-line).  Please register with SDWA on-line!   Coach's cards are ONLY available on-line at a cost of $47.00. {Coaches cards now require a background check}  The background check fee of $17.00 is included in the $47.00  cost of card.

ENTRY FEE:  $10.00 per tournament with USA Wrestling card for the 9/1/07-8/31/08 season; 2nd weight $8.00 (2 weights maximum per tournament); $5.00 late entry fee. NOTE: USAW cards from the spring expire on 8/31/2009. You must have a 2009-10 USAW card to compete in the Spring. 

RULES:  Modified USA Wrestling Rules for Folkstyle, Freestyle, and GR. Grappling  per USA/FILA Wrestling Rules. Grappling for Seniors ONLY!.

WEIGH INS:  7:00 to 8:30 AM; $5.00 late entry fee...NO EXCEPTIONS

WRESTLING:  Clinic starts at 9:00 AM.  Open & Kids from 9:30 AM until done; Jrs. & Cadets from 10:00 AM until about 5:00 PM.

MATCHES:   

• FOLKSTYLE: All Divisions, 5 minutes running time (periods: 1-2-2). 

• FREESTYLE and GRECO-ROMAN: All Divisions, 6 minutes (periods: 2-2-2); match competition ends after a competitor wins 2 of 3 rounds. 

• GRAPPLING: All Divisions, 5 minutes running time (period: 5).

DIVISIONS & WEIGHTS: 

ALL WEIGHTS AND DIVISIONS ARE SUBJECT TO BLOCK WEIGHTING ACCORDING TO THE ALLOWANCES OF USAW RULES.

• Bantam Boys/Girls (born 2001-2002):40, 45, 50, 55, 60, 65, 70, 75, 75+ (15 lbs. maximum difference).

• Midget Boys/Girls (born 1999-2000): 50, 55, 60, 65, 70, 75, 80, 87, 95, 103, 112, 120, 120+ (20 lb. maximum difference).  

• Novice Boys/Girls (born 1997-98): 60, 65, 70, 75, 80, 85, 90, 95, 100, 105, 112, 120, 130, 140, 140+ (25 lb. maximum difference).  

• Schoolboy/girl (born 1995-96): 70, 75, 80, 85, 90, 95, 100, 105, 110, 115, 120, 125, 130, 145, 165, 185, 205, 225, 250.  

• Cadet (born 1993-94) 84, 91, 98, 105, 112, 119, 125, 130, 135, 140, 145, 152, 160, 171, 189, 215, 285.  

• Junior (grades 9-12, and born after 8/31/89): 98, 105, 112, 119, 125, 130, 135, 140, 145, 152, 160, 171, 189, 215, 285.  

• Senior Men (born before 1990, ‘90-‘91 require medical certificate) 121, 132, 145.5, 163, 185, 211.5, 264.5.  

• Sr. Women (born before 1990, ’90-91 require medical certificate) 105.5, 112, 121, 130, 138.5, 147.5, 158.5.

• GRAPPLING (Seniors only): Group Weights

SPECTATORS ADMISSION: $3.00 Admission charge.  No charge for wrestlers and children 12 and under.

*The medical certificate attests the athlete is of sufficient physical and emotional maturity to participate at this level.

UCSD

UCSD Wrestling Team competed at the Western Conference Championships in San Jose this weekend. The team did great! We qualified all 8 guys for Nationals with a 9th going as a wild card.

Team Scores: UCSD 125.5, San Jose State 119, Idaho State 81, University of Arizona 63, 
UCSB 42.5, Fresno State 26.5, Utah State 17

Also, Anai Novoa (Hoover High School) placed first for UCSB

Fallbrook coach and former National Team member and coach, Roye Oliver is competing in the Veterans Freestyle World Championships this weekend.  Roye wrestles out of San Diego's No Mercy Wrestling Academy.  Roye is a 2007 Veterans US National Freestyle Champion.

SOPAC Pictures

For years, the NAVY 32nd Street Wrestling Team (SOPAC), under the command of Commodore Juan Chavez, along with various Marine Corps participants from the bases in the area were the mainstay of the SDWA senior competition.  After 911 the team gradually declined as it and members of the Marines were called to duty in Iraq.  Since the Commodore's retirement last year, the SOPAC Team has not competed. Former team member, Luke Barker sent in some pictures of SOPAC teams.

Escondido Summer League

Next week's meet will be on Tuesday, June 19 (NOT WEDNESDAY!). Wrestling begins at 5pm.

The Escondido Summer League will wrestle each Wednesday night in June (Wednesday 06-06, Wednesday 06-13, Tuesday 06-19, and Wednesday 06-27).  One Time weigh-ins on the first night of competition...Wrestling will begin by 5pm (weigh-ins @4pm on 06-06-07) and finished by about 8pm each night. No USA/AAU cards necessary. Instead, an Insurance fee will be included in the TEAM ENTRY FEE of $160.  Escondido will charge $40 per date for schools who can't, for whatever reason, come to all 4 meetings.

Congratulations to the team for a good showing and especially to Jordan Taghvai from Carlsbad, who finished out his high school career by going 8-0 with seven pins, only giving up two points the entire tournament.  He also defeated Zuniga from Schurr, who he had lost to in the Freestyle State finals; and Bo Lukehart from Vacaville (2nd in Ca H.S. State) who he lost to in a controversial match in the state semis.

Over the last few years Ivan Ivanov, the Head Greco-Roman Wrestling Coach at the USOEC in Northern Michigan, has been introducing several new types of extremely durable throwing and workout dummies.

Besides the throwing dummies, there is also a line of workout dummies like the Bulgarian Power Bag shown below.
